The Initiative To Increase Awareness of Ocean Plastic Waste Solutions

Our Clear Blue OCEANS initiative is one of the TahitiPetey Foundation's primary awareness programs.

As hard as it may be to believe, we use in excess of 210 billion plastic beverage containers a year worldwide, and many are for water in the 12 to 16 ounce (500ml/750ml) bottle sizes.

In North America alone, we use and discard over 2.5 million plastic beverage and water bottles every five minutes More than 2.4 billion plastic bottles each month or over 28 billion bottles last year alone.  This madness must stop!

From sea to shining sea, plastic water bottles, shopping bags, food containers and countless other plastic products are running into our oceans by way of streams, rivers and tributaries, clogging up our street drains causing flooding and piling up in landfills.

This is one of the main reasons we developed our StarFish Organization social network, so that our members can spread this important information and help reverse the growing trend of plastic waste. However, the over 400 billion plastic products that consist mainly of one-time use food containers are just the tip of the plastic waste iceberg.

Folks, this is not just a North American issue,

it's a serious global waste problem.

We are all told that recycling is the answer, but less than 10 percent of all plastic waste is, and boat loads more of plastic waste is shipped to other countries where it is stacked and dumped for years at a time and never used!

To reverse this trend we need to get serious and change the way we view this issue and the products that cause it. If we do not, life in our oceans will most certainly die within the next 50 years, and the oceans are the world's largest natural food resource.

Just visit any local grocery or drug store today in North America and you will see that almost everything either comes in or is packaged with plastic of some sort. Every loaf of bread we eat comes in one or even two plastic bags, and countless other prepared foods come in plastic containers today.

Yet despite the waste and damage this causes, no one seems to care about the impact these items have on our environment or our oceans. There is simply no outrage on this issue? Not yet anyway, but we hope to increase awareness of this issue to a tipping point and start the outrage.

We are counting on you to help us accomplish that by joining our StarFish Organization today and become a Digital Activist for not just the oceans, but for entrepreneurs who will help us find the solutions we need to address this issue. Although many of us recycle as much as we can, we need to use less of these products or alternatives.

We want to believe that most people simply do not fully understand the seriousness of this issue, and that they actually do care, and will alter their plastic use if they knew the truth. Most people also do not realize that plastic toxins have already entered our food chain in a number of ways.

Ocean plastic waste is a real issue that MUST be dealt with and has already created a floating plastic soup of toxic debris greater than the size of North America itself in the North Pacific Ocean. A plastic soup of products that are washing up on remote beaches and our own coastlines, killing millions of fishes, marine life and birds each year.

We will set out in 2010 on a South Pacific Expedition to explore the impact of plastic waste, Climate Change and sea rise on the Islands of French Polynesia, in the South Pacific. We will report back to our members first hand accounts of just how this issue is impacting the most remote and beautiful Islands in the world.

There are many worthy organizations that have begun addressing the plastic waste problem. The Foundation's Clear Blue OCEANS initiative is designed to become a collective effort that will mobilize global brands and people of all ages, to spread awareness of the plastic waste issues to help reduce it. It's that simple!

Together we will have a unique opportunity to educate our children and friends about making better choices about using plastics, and help reduce the number of plastic products that reach our oceans, and thereby our food chain.

The simple fact is we MUST start talking about the impact that our daily use of plastic has on the planet and begin to implement solutions to offset those impacts. The first step in this process will depend on your own willingness to change some of your daily habits.

The time for action is now, so join our StarFish Organization today and help us promote our Clear Blue OCEANS initiative.

Working together we can and will make a difference!
